The school pre-1964, before it was renovated
The old church on the right was used as classrooms and was demolished during the renovation. The old building to the left of the picture (beside the science laboratories) was replaced by the building we were in. In June each year between 1961 and 1963, when the Inter Cert and Leaving Cert exams were on, we were moved to one or other of those old buildings because the primary school hall was used for the exams (before the renovation). As they wanted noisy young pupils out of the way, they sent us over to the secondary school.

  1. Bhuel, a chairde,
Gerry Murphy/Gearóid Ó Murchú here 50 years later. I was one of those who didn’t complete in ’69 and went back for the extra year. Spent 2 years training as a primary teacher and subsequently 7 years in Ballyfermot, where I learned more about life than I had done in the previous 20+ years. Returned to Dundalk in 1979 and served as principal teacher in St Joseph’s NS, Muirtheimhne Mór for 32 years. Helped to establish, what is now, Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan. Completed BA and MSc during that time and hope also to have made a difference to some along the way. Finished off my working life as President of IPPN (Principals’ Professional Support Body) for 2 years and retired in 2013.
My real life began when I married Marian (Sligo) in 1975 and together we had 2 boys and now 4 grandchildren. Since our retirement we are lucky to spend a good deal of time in Portugal – blue skies forever. My son Ruairí was returned to Louth Co Co in May and thank you to those of you who gave him a scratch on the ballot paper in Dundalk South.
I will miss out on the reunion as we had made arrangements to attend friends’ wedding in PT. Many of those on our Memory List were good friends. Remember Paddy Quigley’s unplanned haircut in the science lab. Boyler and I shared a flat for a year in 1972-73, those memories are unique. Donal Lenihan and I kept up contact until his untimely accident. Tommy McBride’s nephew is a best friend to one of my sons – same humour. Aidan, Jim and Ken also influenced us in those early days. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a nanamacha uaisle.
My earliest encounter with class mates of ’69 was Delivery Room in Drogheda April 1952 – Mac Néill, Mac Carthaine and I arrived within hours of each other. Peter McKevitt and I are family now – my niece and Peter Óg. The 2 Mulligans have been good friends to me for a long time. Paddy Kirk taught me to play snooker … but never taught me how to win. “An Searcach Soinneanta” is a tag I remember, see you in Tír Chonaill later in summer, Joe – you were never soinneanta. Tuairisc, have not seen you for years, keep well ‘til we meet again. Peter Nulty (‘half past two Peeteer’) thanks for being a good friend, The ‘terrible twins’ D&D (Murphys stick together), Tom(my) Toner good to read your comment … and all the rest.
Finally, I’d like to thank my classmates (4th year, I think) … I had just handed my mother’s note to ‘School Team Coach’ asking to be excused from Football Match on …day as I was dancing in the Ulster Championships – afterwards the class was asked what you would think of a boy who would prefer put on a skirt and go dancing rather than play with the school team … to your combined credit there was no ‘wished for’ laughter and the moment passed.
Go raibh maith agaibh uilig, ádh mór oraibh san am atá le teacht, until we meet again.
Le bród agus buíochas ó chroí
Gerry Murphy – class of ‘69

  2. Hi All,
    Well done Peter & Joe.
Very happily married for 43 years – 2 beautiful daughters -2 darling grandsons (to even the balance!!)
Went to Dublin, did surveying and back to the “town”.
Had my own successful construction company and now retired 15 years – did everything from a needle to an anchor.
Interestingly went back to our old “alma mater” 25 years ago – Frank Cooney invited us to extend it & also design and build the new Sports Hall in the only tight corner available (sadly not to ‘Peter Rice’ standards but to a tight budget!)
A wonderful man is Frank and not the Latin tyrant we might have thought when we first met him.
I thoroughly enjoy the simple things in life, enjoy travel and divide our time between home – Dublin – Spain.
Lovely seeing the photos & comments – enjoy the craic and sorry I cannot make it – keep well.
Special Hi to Brian, Paul Cahill & Aidan McCarron.

GREAT NEWS, We have been in contact with Terry O Hanlon, via Paddy Kirk, (thanks Paddy) and he is looking forward to being at the Reunion. That’s everyone contacted. Looking forward to the 10th June.

  4. Great to hear that Tony Clarke is joining us to encourage Denis Murphy on the Golf course !

Great to see Mick Ryan coming all the way from Detroit for the reunion. He has also put his name down for the golf . Looking forward to catching up with you then Last time we met was at an O Mhony’s match in Knockbridge in the early seventies.

  6. Ciarán McDonnell

    Hello everyone,

After school I studied physics in UCD. This led me to working with computers and I spent some years in the computer industry, including two years in QELEQ in Ard Easmuinn. Subsequently I worked for 35 years as a lecturer & researcher in computing: 7 years in TCD and 28 years in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). I retired from DIT in 2011.

I have been married to Alice for 38 years and we have lived in Dalkey for the last 35 years. We have three adult children and three grandchildren. I don’t visit Dundalk often, although I pass through occasionally when going to Carlingford where I still have some family.

Tá mé ag súil go mór leis an athaontú agus le bualadh libh go léir arís.
    Slán go fóill,
    Ciarán

  7. Wait until you see David Murphy. He hasn’t changed a bit, instant recognition and he also conceals a good golf handicap. A great deal of of thanks must also go to Detective Ciarán Mc Donnell (of CBS Special Branch) for helping to trace some of our schoolmates by using some of his most imaginative research skills which includes checking through RIP.ie,and Facebook , 11850 etc. Thanks Ciarán

  8. Greetings to all. I am looking forward to June 10th and renewing acquaintances with old(well,we are now are we not?) schoolmates. Although living in England now for a very long time I keep in touch with home regularly and particularly with Eoin Keenan whom I see annually. Is there a list as yet if attendees? I’m not sure re the golf Peter as I’ll be travelling light and without my set of Nike US Masters clubs(ha ha). Is this email sufficient to confirm my attendance or do I need to contact big Joe also?
    Best regards
    Don Gribben.

  9. Can’t make out no 8. Looks very prosperous, cultured but with a panchant for rear ends. Anyone know who it is

  10. Looking forward to June 10th and the challenge of recognizing old class-mates and hoping that some at least will remember O Tuairisc!!!
